Story

The Dusty Jazz story began in 2009 when Giulia, after some experience in dance and theatre, moved to Valencia to write her thesis and discovered Lindy Hop at the university. It was love at first sight and as soon as she returned to Turin, she involved Stefano, who in the meantime had some experience in couple dancing and was the leader of the rock band ‘The Chicles’. The passion for this dance grew more and more and in search of new stimuli and new references, Stefano and Giulia began to travel to international festivals, first to train and later also to compete.

In 2012 they created their first reality in Turin called ‘Lindy Hop Torino’. Initially dragging and involving their closest friends, they created a group of Turin aficionados for whom dancing became one of the main activities of the evening and for some even of the day. They soon realised the social potential of this activity and culture and decided to try to make it big!

On the 8th of July 2013, the statutes were written and Dusty Jazz, a non-profit association, was officially born.

From that day on things didn't stop, Stefano and Giulia's lives changed forever and with them the lives of many others. Dusty Jazz grew more and more and the first times began: the first time when it was necessary to find a bigger location for the classes, the first time when it was necessary to find more teachers to make the team grow, the first time when it reached 100, 200, 500 members, the first Lindy On The Road, the first Dusty Parade, the first International Swing Train Festival.

By 2019, Dusty Jazz had reached over 600 members, had more than 30 active annual classes and organised 2 international festivals a year. It had become a point of reference for the Italian and international Swing community.

Although Covid's survival was challenged, the enthusiasm, passion and participation of its members enabled the association to overcome this difficult period. In 2021, Dusty Jazz was back in full strength. The numbers had dwindled, but the desire to socialise and have fun after the difficult Covid years was the best guarantee of optimism for the future. To lay the foundations for a comeback, Dusty Jazz's first venue, the Dustyficio, was opened in September 2022, providing an office for staff and a rehearsal space for teachers and students.

Today, Dusty Jazz is back to pre-pandemic levels, both in terms of membership and the number of courses held each year. But it is not stopping there. In the spirit of continuous improvement, as of September 2024, Dusty Jazz has a new venue, the Dusty Jazz Studio, with 3 dance rooms and more space to dedicate to its members. Moreover, from the same month, in addition to Jazz Roots and Lindy Hop, we have started the teaching of a third discipline, Blues, and for the first time (another first...) Dusty Jazz courses will also be held outside Turin: in Rivoli and Trapani!

All this thanks to the enthusiasm and passion of the volunteers, a fond Board of Directors and a tireless staff.

And the Dusty Jazz story goes on...
